Making A Difference

2015-03-27_0753What an interesting week this has been for me. As many of you know I write for and do marketing and PR for Grammy’s Farm. But I also do a wide variety of other things. I own and operate House Cleaning Tucson, a green friendly house cleaning service. As part of my services I also offer organizing support.

In fact I provide a wide variety of services that include Search Engine Optimization and companion or caregiver services. Recently, I posted that I had several cancellations for this month and I was needing work. Well, my friends stepped to the plate. And I will be working 5 of 7 days this week. And next week is filling up quickly.

I like what I do because my focus is on making a difference in people’s lives and not merely providing a service. This week I helped a friend clean her home to get it ready for the arrival of her vacationing teen-aged daughter. It was a joy to observe a mother’s love for her daughter and her anticipation for her return. Priceless.

Then on two different days I assisted to people get their lives and home organized as they both headed on new adventures. I witnessed the sorry of one remembering a close friend and client who had died. My friend made custom clothes for this person and was now transitioning away from that business. In the organizing process she came upon some projects that she had done for her friend…. She cried…. It was a very tender moment.

Then another friend needed help organizing her kitchen as she embarked on a major life style change. She was giving sugar the boot and needed some help getting the process rolling. She was alive with energy and anticipation of a healthier lifestyle. Her enthusiasm was contagious.

Then today, I cleaned a home for a woman that is wheel chair bound. So what she is capable of doing, as far as cleaning, is limited. She also has a big black dog that sheds everywhere. I was amazed by how well she kept her home but she needed help. On days like today, the clean, just looks cleaner when I done. It was truly about making a difference. In fact, this whole week has been about making a difference.

I was truly amazed by this woman’s positive attitude about life. It was a joy to help her. Did I say how grateful I am… Got to meet some very special people this week and to make a few shekels in the process…

It is also a fundraiser for the food bank. Why I Perform Sage Smudging

SmudgingAs many of my readers already know the love of my life Geraldine died in late 2012. And that’s where my smudging story begins. I was her sole caregiver and after she died so did my caregiver role. Yet, I still had this huge need to give to others. And I spent much of 2013 searching for a new way to give freely to others.

Then in October I re-connected with Tony Marotta the leader the hand drumming group One Heart Beat. Tony and I go back to the late 70’s but I had not seen him in over 30 years. I had been attending one of their monthly full moon jams. He provided me with some sage and asked me to smudge the event. Smudging involves the burning of sage. It is used in Native American purification ceremonies.

What Tony didn’t know is that I used to make smudge sticks and sell them on Fourth Avenue. I also used to attend many music festivals where I performed smudging. It has always amazed me when I observe the healing power of sage at work. Everyone who I smudged expressed their gratitude with words, smiles, and hugs. It is a beautiful experience.

But I had not performed smudges for over a decade when Tony asked me to perform at his events. Originally he provided the sage, but when his supply dwindled I discovered some good sources and started purchasing it myself.

Now, the sage ceremony, when performed on myself had no discernible effect. However, that is not so for those who receive this blessing from me. I literally watch people being transformed in front of me as they are smudged.

It seems to be an especially powerful experience for those who have experienced the death of a loved one. I know of half dozen or so members of the group that have lost a spouse. These folks seek me out on a regular basis to be smudged. I also have observed its positive effect on those suffering from PTSD. These are just a few examples of why I smudge. Smudging simply allows me to bless other people who are hurting in some way.

Now, I am aware that some people don’t like the smell of sage. And I attempt to accommodate them at all times. Well, that’s it. I smudge to bless others.

Almost Another Urban

Maker HouseI have been attending a gathering called Sacred Spaces recently at the Maker House in downtown Tucson. The Maker House is located in an old mansion downtown that once housed the Mountain Oyster Club. This place is a great venue that is worth exploring as it offers a wide variety of activities and programs.

One of the many groups that take advantage of the venue is called Sacred Spaces. This group focuses on compassion and spirituality. They meet every Sunday from 4:30 to 6:30. During the cooler months they meet in the beautiful patio which actually has grass. Now, we all meet inside.

It was there that I “Almost meet another Urban.” Yes, I said almost. I struck up a conversation with a woman named Nancy, When I told her my name was Urban. She stated “Urban is a great name. I like the name Urban. I said “Really!” She responded “yes, I had an uncle named Urban and I wanted to name him Urban. Sadly, I was vetoed by my husband and we named our son Justine.”

I could see the disappointment on her face and hear it in her voice. I went on to explain that my name had been very good to me. Then a bounding young boy appears and I witnessed my first Almost Urban. I wondered how different his life would have been as an Urban rather than Justine. Amazingly the boy wore glasses as I did as a child and he reminded me of myself.

I Don’t Provide Move Out House Cleaning Services Tucson

House Cleaning TucsonIt’s quickly becoming the rental move out season in Tucson as students close out the spring semester. So I figured that it was time to update my blog. House Cleaning Tucson does not provide rental move out services.

My service is geared towards busy professionals, disabled, and seniors that need, want, and desire a clean home. The whole idea here is not just to provide a cleaning service. No, my desire is to affect a positive change in people’s lives by proving regular scheduled green friendly cleaning services.

Recently, I had the privilege to work for an 88 years old Greek gentleman who was attempting to stay out of a long term care facility. Unfortunately, he was hospitalized and never returned home again. In the few months that I cleaned his home we became close. He loved to share his life history with me and I enjoyed his stories as I cleaned.

He grew up in a Greek family in Douglas, Arizona. He would eventually speak 8 languages 5 of them fluently. He moved to New York City and was involved in theater. I was fascinated by his life stories and he appreciated that I actively listened. We often talked about life and death. During this time together he lost a sister and I was able to share in his grief and to provide support. All while providing green friendly service.

I even became his advocate when his caregivers where not properly cleaning up his incontinence. This immediately improved his quality of life. Oh MY God, I was really proud of that. The quality of his life during his last few months at home improved vastly. I don’t get that kind of reward doing move-outs…. Enough said!
